A Once-in-a-Century, Massive Redevelopment is Under Way in Shibuya

Miyashita Park and other new buildings are springing up, with planned projects moving full speed ahead for completion in 2034. Shibuya Marui, a shopping complex long celebrated as a Shibuya landmark, has drawn down the curtain on half a century of history. The new Shibuya Marui will be built 60% of fire-resistant wood and similar substances, a class of materials that has witnessed dramatic technological progress. The construction process will generate some 2,000 t less CO2 emissions than if it had been done in steel-reinforced concrete. Adopting the highest standards in sustainable technology, the project aims to be a more sustainable facility that will promote reduction of environmental impact.
