Shibuya area: Undergoing redevelopment on a once-in-a-century scale

Shibuya area listings

As a nexus of the JR Yamanote Line and other JR lines, three private railways and three Tokyo Metro subway lines, Shibuya Station and its environs have been in the throes of transformation for quite a number of years. New buildings, such as Miyashita Park, are springing up one after another, with others slated for completion around 2030. Flows of pedestrian traffic through and around the station are being improved as well.

Shibuya Marui, one of Shibuya’s and Japan’s most iconic commercial buildings, whose curtain fell last year after almost 50 years, will revive as Japan’s first all-wooden modern commercial complex in 2026. Thanks to striking advances in wood-fireproofing and other technologies, the mall will be 60% made of wood. Compared with conventional steel-frame buildings, the facility will slash CO2 emissions by some 2,000 t. The highest standards in sustainable technology will be adopted, advancing and promoting the reduction of environmental impact.

Think of Shibuya and naturally you think of shopping, but in fact there is much more to this vibrant area. Walk 15 minutes from the station and you’ll find favorite upscale residential neighborhoods such as Shoto, Shinsencho and Nanpeidai, home to low-rise condominium complexes and grand villas. Embassies, churches, art galleries and green spaces adorn these quarters, enfolding an oasis of artistic ambience amid the bustle of the city.
